The purpose of the CareerCenter is help you keep moving towards a life of meaning and purpose. It is not about just getting you a job because, if you can’t find work that you are passionate about, you will quit. And, if you quit before you have a better job, you will likely start a downward spiral that leads to survival mode mentality which creates enormous mental stress which generally lead to physical problems.
Rather than rush out and get a job (i.e. first job is worst job), get onto a path that leads to the type of work that you love. We all know that it’s hard to quit a job that you love, and it’s easy to quit a job you hate.
What’s the problem?
You are taking this course because you don’t have a job you love; one that you are passionate about enough to get through the challenges and difficult times; a job where you will always strive to do and be your best (rather than find ways to cut corners and coast).
You probably don’t have that job (i.e. career position) because you’ve never thought about what that would be; you believe that a job is something you do because you need money to pay for stuff. However, that’s just a story that we’ve been fed by people we know, by television and our own inability to find work that we love. So, the first thing you need to do is figure out what you want to do.
The next biggest challenge (i.e. once you know what you want to do) is obtaining the skills needed for that position. Most people return to prison because they don’t have stable and meaningful employment; and they don’t have stable and meaningful employment because you don’t have the necessary skills; you don’t have the skills needed to obtain the type of employment you want (and you either don’t know how to obtain the skills, or you are unwilling to spend the time to learn the necessary skills).
