To help students obtain stable and meaningful employment [for good!]
Novum-U is the only program designed to help you get on the path towards a life of meaning and purpose. Our Apprentice and Journeyman programs help you obtain the hard skills necessary to become successful (which for us is a function of, “financially security and a life filled with meaning and purpose”). We highly recommend that you compete the 4-week Apprentice Programs prior to starting the CareerCenter.
The wrong path to success
Most people find jobs by searching for job openings through postings. We ask, “Who’s hiring?” and “Of the jobs that are available which do I feel I can get?” This will only lead to short-term success (i.e. getting a job to pay the bills and then quitting, or being miserable). This is called, re-active employment search.
If this is the wrong way, why does every other organization advocate, “going online and finding a job”? Because it is easy and the caseworkers get to claim victory if you get employed. In fairness to them (i.e. being polite), they aren’t trying to help you have a life of meaning and purpose; they are just trying to get you off their caseload so that they look good to their employer –that’s why most such people aren’t very impressive; they are just doing their job, of pushing, prodding, pulling and guiding you away from unemployment and towards employment; that’s it, no big deal.
The right path to success
Our approach is pro-active: we start with the important question, “What type of employment will you be passionate about?” and then we go after it. Here’s the simple process:
- Figure out, “What do you want to do?”
- Why do you want to do it?
- Who do you need to become?
- Find 3 to 5 companies that do what you want to do
- Research them
- Create a plan
- Execute the plan
- Get a “Foundational job” to pay the bills until #1 comes in.
Over the next two weeks you will
- Complete our Employment Planning Workshop
- Create a separate resume for each prospective employer
- Prepare for your interview with each employer
We have Foundational job employers that we can arrange interviews for. NOTE: we cannot guarantee that any of these employers will hire you; you still must convince them that you can make them money, fit into their culture and are trustworthy.
